What he does with the hilt afterwards is unknown. After throwing the scabbard into the fire, Tywin can be seen picking up Ice's now useless hilt from the edge of the fireplace. When Jaime asks about the source of the Valyrian steel, Tywin simply replies that "the previous owner no longer needed it." Tywin also callously burns Ice's wolf-pelt scabbard in the forge's fire, as an further gesture of spite and dishonor towards the Starks. However, due to Ice's substantial size, there's enough Valyrian steel to make two longswords. Ice is melted down on Tywin's orders by a Volantene blacksmith brought to King's Landing to make Jaime a new sword. In a show of twisted irony, Ice is the weapon used to kill Ned and is kept in King's Landing afterward as a trophy. When Ned is accused of treason, Ilyn Payne, the King's Justice, is ordered to kill him at King Joffrey. Later, Eddard cleans the sword in the godswood at Winterfell. He holds the sword before him as he passes the sentence. Theon Greyjoy holds the scabbard, as Eddard draws the blade. Eddard Stark uses Ice to behead Will, a deserter from the Night's Watch.
